Yes, the same Ivory Coast that gave the world a superstar named Alpha Blondy. Mamakaffe who lives in Paris and also a dual national of France have been steadily making a name for herself. Christened Emile Legros Cherif she is one half of a twin. Her musical exposure due to being born into a family of traditional drummers. Her along with some of her siblings formed a group called Doni Doni. After leaving Africa in 2007 in a bold move to Jamaica she confesses that “ I wanted to be close to reggae music because when I first heard it my life was not the same” What at first should have been a short trip extended into nine years. Jamaica was tough as she spoke no English much less understanding the dialect spoken in the island known as patois. But characteristically determined she learned fast. After struggling in Kingston to be noticed in a crowded field of aspiring artists in 2014 her persistence brought her to street publicists Ricardo Berry who introduced her to current manager Roger Grant. Grant produced a single, a Rita Marley cover, Beauty of Jah Plan which got everybody's attention. The song was released on 619 Entertainment Group/ Tuff Mind and Tender Heart Records and co-produced by Benton Guitsie Dunn and won Best Reggae Song for 2014 at the Akademia Awards in the USA and that same year she became the first African artist to be distributed by VP Records . In 2017 her debut album SLAVE dropped and subsequently garnered critical acclaim. The album was shortlisted for GRAMMY consideration in the Best Reggae Album category. SLAVE was also runner up for Best African Album as named by REGGAE.FR and was widely praised in various magazines all over Europe. On the heels of this in 2018 she headlined the Afro Pfingsten Music Festival in Switzerland and booked for other shows in Holland, Belgium, Spain, and France. She recently returned from Kenya after a super successful promotional tour. The first single Love Party to be included on her sophomore album won her a spot on Spotify New Reggae Release playlist and a legion of new fans. Now a teaser EP Success is about to drop with leadoff single Forever Together, a collaboration with reggae legend Sizzla. As Mamakaffe career continues to grow the Jimmy Cliff lyrics “you can get it if you really want” fits her very well. https://www.facebook.com/mamakaffe.petertosh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGuErjAGA74 DJ`s SELECTOR RAS JULIUS (Kingston, Jamica) FB Link: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010410991372 SMOKING TUNA SOUND (Rostock, Berlin, London) FB Link: https://www.facebook.com/Smoking-Tuna-Soundsystem-257542824327159/ /* */ ?> |
